Where in the world is That Reading Thing?

There are American and Canadian versions of the student lesson materials which reflect the differences in spelling (colour/color) and pronunciation, especially the r-coloured vowels.

If you’re wondering what that means, say ‘saw’ and ‘door’. If they rhyme, you’ll be happy with the UK version. If they don’t, you might want the American or Canadian student pages.

It depends on their level of spoken English.

TRT doesn’t work as written with EAL students who have very little spoken English. However, the linguistic phonics principles that underpin TRT are still important for both reading and spelling so combining both the teaching of English vocab with the TRT strategies and activities should help your students. It will take a little more planning than just working through the TRT programme but it could be a great addition to your EAL teaching toolbox.

On the other hand, if your learners have fairly good spoken English, then That Reading Thing can be delivered as it is. About a quarter of the students in our external evaluation spoke English as an additional language.
