Who benefits from That Reading Thing?

Adult literacy learners

That Reading Thing uses grown up phonics to meet the needs of adult literacy learners with dignity and good humour.  TRT helps adult literacy learners become unstuck, no matter how many times they've tried before. It's never too late.

Formal and informal adult literacy

That Reading Thing is at home in post-16 settings, TAFE, community college, organisations that offer Functional Skills or GED - anywhere adults who struggle to read are working towards a qualification.

Sometimes adults prefer to catch up without the pressure of doing tests to earn a qualification. The TRT tutor might be a friend, relative or neighbour but large literacy provisions like Islington Adult Community Learning also offer That Reading Thing to their learners outside formal classes.

On his 65th wedding anniversary in March, Bill took himself to town and, for the first time ever, chose a card for his wife by himself. He said it took him a long time to read the verses and he couldn’t understand every word, but he was super happy to have achieved this at last. Learners that previously had no real plan or tools to help them read or spell were now very quickly able to attack words and have a fighting chance of spelling them correctly, regardless of a word’s length. Simon Fuller, Curriculum Manager, Islington Adult Community Learning

Prison Education

This is a special area of adult education. All prison education providers in England now have trained That Reading Thing tutors.
