Phonics Resources for ESOL

Please note that we do everything we can to keep our sites secure but you download at your own risk.

Here are some ideas for aligning old favourite ESOL activities with the logic of English.

🟣A. Phonics for ESOL webinar notes.

🟢B.  Three resources that replace both word shapes and letter by letter activities.

1. Phoneme & Grapheme chart – use as a phonics treasure hunt (downloads as a pdf)

Phoneme grapheme list UK

2. What to do instead of word shapes: turn them into word (grapheme) puzzles
Teaching English vocabulary using word shapes doesn’t reflect the logic of a language where words are made up of graphemes that represent the sounds we say out loud. Of course, words are also connected visually by meaning which we use to remember tricky spellings and extend vocabulary.

3. Wordsearch master – using graphemes rather than letters (downloads as an MS Excel document)

🔴C. The -ed ending – a little video for ESOL teachers (word list downloads as a pdf)

🟡D. We have a new self-guided training for That Spelling Thing

🟣E. If you work in general adult literacy, explore That Reading Thing
