The Programme

ThatReadingThing consists of 50 Levels over four main sections:

Levels 1-4

  • Assessments It’s great for reluctant learners to accomplish something just by showing up for an assessment. We usually jump right into Level 5 and beyond and, in 40 minutes or so, many are well on their way to a Level 10 certificate.

Levels 5-18

  • Foundations This starts with the simplest of word structures then adds endings to help students practice reading longer and longer words. They discover that spelling and reading are linked and that LONG words aren’t so difficult after all. Most learners work through these levels very quickly but everyone does them to make sure that they’ve got a firm foundation for dealing with the whole complex code of English. Students who find learning difficult for whatever reason may take longer to work through this section.

Levels 19 & 20

  • Intro to Clones This short section introduces the bits of the English code which trip up most struggling readers. This is where the process slows down a bit for everyone and where we get into loads more reading. Basically, we all have to deal with the fact that there are lots of ways to write some sounds (ay, ai, ae, a, etc) and there are lots of ways to pronounce some letter combinations (break, beach, bread). However, it also helps the student discover that these things are limited and learnable.

Levels 21 - 50

  • Clones This is where you spend less time on TRT lessons and more time on reading.
