By the End…

“By the End of This Book”

By the time you’ve worked through this book,

  • You’ll understand how what you see on the page relates to what you say out loud.

  • You’ll see that there are limits to our apparently infinite and chaotic spelling system.

  • You’ll know how to prompt someone struggling in the face of an unfamiliar word or a tricky spelling.

  • You’ll no longer be giving easy answers but guiding students towards working out the answers for themselves.

  • You’ll say things like:

Say the sounds and tell me what you hear.

How many syllables?

Say the syllables clearly.

What’s the first sound in ______?

How do you write the “ee” sound in receive?
