Thanks, Francis. Would love to hear more about NATE’s ideas for helping the real strugglers at secondary level. TRT started as a strictly “outside the system” programme but more and more schools are expressing an interest as their students struggle with curriculum reading requirements.

This looks like a really good idea. I like the informality of the approach, and the notion of “real reading”, it very much links with what the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) are saying about reading…

Hi Tricia,
I know what you mean about the ‘ghoti’ thing. I actually had a couple of university lecturers throw it at me when I was giving a talk at Canberra University. Yawn! The Spanish have a particularly apposite expression for moments such as this: Qué rollo! How boring!
Nice to see you keeping up the good work – even if it does upset some of your friends! Happy New Year to you and may you teach many young adults/adults to read.
